About the...

The Grange Hall is owned by Nye Family of America Association, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the 1681 Benjamin Nye Homestead & Museum and the Grange Hall.

The Association welcomes membership and support by individuals, families, and businesses, and makes the Grange Hall available for event rental as a community resource to individuals and families and to non-profit organizations, such as the Grange Hall Coffeehouse.

The landmark Grange Hall at 91 Old County Road, East Sandwich was built in 1889 by the East Sandwich Mill and Hall Association primarily for use by the Grange #139. The Grange was an organization intended to better the lives of farm families with social opportunities, education, and cooperative projects. Local people fondly recall the Saturday evenings during the 1930's to 1950's when the Grange sponsored Whist parties (a type of card game). After coffee and doughnuts were served, the card tables were folded up and put away (the very same ones the Coffeehouse uses today). Then a live combo provided music for dancing until midnight.

By the 1980's Grange membership dwindled and the charter was turned in to the Massachusetts state Grange. In 1991 the Hall was acquired by the Nye Family of America Association, Inc. for operation as a community hall.

The Hall has stood strong through times of war, depression, growth and change. It reminds us that the virtue of community is not something lost to a nostalgic past but a challenge we must all earn and value in the present.

Managed by the Nye Family of America Association, Inc. the Grange Hall now hosts a wide variety of events including monthly
Contra Dances, Poetry Recitals, Art Shows, and of course, the Grange Hall Coffeehouse.

When you come to the Grange Hall Coffeehouse, you will notice the historical Benjamin Nye Homestead & Museum next door - you should make it a point to visit! Built in 1681, the Nye Homestead is open to the public from June 15th to October 15th, Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 3:00pm. Admission is $3.00 for adults and includes a guided tour.

Persons or groups wishing to learn more about the hall and its general availability can contact John Cullity, Hall Manager at P.O. Box 219, East Sandwich, MA 02753 or call 508-888-7629.
